Chapter Eleven

It was easy enough to go digging into the lives of those involved in Trillian’s past and the list was already made for me. I started with the victim herself, quickly uncovering that Boyd wasn’t her real last name. Or, at least, not her official one, but her mother’s maiden name. Trillian Boyd somehow made it through the crew security check but Trillian Mitchell? Likely wouldn’t have since she had a record.

Yes, it was sealed thanks to her age at the time and likely why she chose to use her mother’s name instead of her legal surname. Her father, Alec Mitchell, had enough arrests and convictions of his own to make me pause, a conman and grifter with a talent for getting caught enough times even his small crimes added up eventually to serious time. As for her mother, Connie Boyd—who’d retaken her maiden name after her husband went to prison for ten years six months ago—was filing for divorce from her less-than-trustworthy partner. For her part, Connie Boyd seemed on the up-and-up, a librarian in a suburb of Boston.

It made me wonder about Binda and how much she knew about Trillian’s past. She’d mentioned her parents, though not that the vic’s dad was in lockup. Did she know or was she holding back for some reason?

I held off digging into her, finishing with Trillian herself. Aside from that sealed record, she seemed clean enough though I was much more inclined to believe she’d managed to hide her illegal activities better than her father had rather than thinking she’d come to some kind of ah-ha moment that turned her life around. Then again, for all I knew, she had. Except, of course, for the bag of what had to be stolen items I’d found in her locker.

Not nice to think badly of a dead girl, but… there you had it.

I moved on to Melanie Lupe, confirming what she’d told me. She’d spent most of her adult life on yachts, moving up from starting positions as a deck hand on bigger ships to finally captaining the Mojito the last year. She had a stellar record and excellent reviews from the boat owners she’d worked for, including her present employers. There wasn’t even mention of any kind of altercations or misconduct, so I let that thread rest and moved on.

Binda Leary, it turned out, grew up with Trillian, went to school with her since elementary. Now I understood her connection, at least. There were enough pictures of them in social media prior to the pair coming to work on the Mojito that told me they were old flames, as well, not just friends. Binda had gotten her job on the yacht prior to Trillian’s hiring three months later, so she must have recommended her friend and former lover. Had they been together all along and were playing Melanie? I hoped not, but it wasn’t my problem. Unless it led to murder.

Still not your problem, Becks. This wasn’t my job anymore. Argh.
